A reminder as we enter Fall 2018, strong cold fronts as they arrive the Texas Gulf Coast will generally push out 1 – 3 feet of water out of Galveston Bay. Maximum
deep draft vessels cold be delayed transiting the Houston Ship Channel until the cold front and high pressure move off the coast and water moves back into the bay.

Coastal Hazard Message
National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX
328 AM CDT Sun Oct 14 2018
...COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY EXTENDED...
...STRONG RIP CURRENTS PERSIST...
.Tide levels along Gulf facing beaches and the western shore of
Galveston Bay are about one and a half feet above normal
astronomical tides. During high tides overnight and again Sunday,
tide levels will approach 3.5 to 4.0 feet and coastal flooding
will be possible, particularly along highway 87 on the Bolivar
Peninsula. Persistent south and southeast winds will cause higher
seas and wave run up.

...COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM CDT THIS
EVENING...
...BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING...
* COASTAL FLOODING...Water levels could reach 3.5 to 4.0 feet
overnight and again Sunday.
* Hazards...COASTAL FLOODING
STRONG RIP CURRENTS
* Timing...Returning threat for coastal flooding overnight and
again Sunday around the times of high tide.
* LOCATION...Gulf facing beaches
* IMPACTS...Minor inundation of low lying areas and roads along
Gulf facing beaches will be possible.
Strong rip currents will produce dangerous swimming conditions
today and will likely persist tomorrow. Hazardous swimming
conditions will occur along Gulf-facing beaches, especially near
piers, jetties, and rock groins.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore...which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the
sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards...beach patrol...
flags and signs. Swim near a lifeguard.
A Beach Hazards Statement is issued when threats such as rip
currents...longshore currents...sneaker waves and other hazards
create life-threatening conditions in the surf zone. Caution
should be used when in or near the water.
A Coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.

...FIRST MAJOR COLD FRONT OF THE SEASON MONDAY MORNING...
A cold front currently situated over the Texas Panhandle will
progress into Southeast Texas Monday through Monday night. This
will cause a drastic drop in high temperatures from near 90 today
to near 60 by Tuesday. Winds will increase Monday morning to 10-15
mph sustained with gusts up to 20-25 mph. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms will begin early Monday morning ahead of the front
with periods of showers and thunderstorms lasting behind the front
through Tuesday. Some of these storms may be strong with gusty
winds and small hail. Locally heavy rainfall is possible.
The cold front will be oriented from northeast to southwest.
Expect the front to approach College Station by 1-2 AM Monday,
Houston by 6-7 AM, and Galveston by 10-11 AM. High temperatures on
Monday will be dependent on how quickly the front passes. For
areas along the coast, temperatures may reach the low 80s before
the front passes, whereas the frontal passage early in the morning
for areas inland will limit high temperatures to near 60.
Significantly colder weather will be possible with highs
struggling to get out of the 50s near College Station. High
temperatures in the Houston area will only warm into the lower
60s. A modest warming trend is expected at the end of the week.
Please continue to monitor NOAA Weather Radio for the latest
forecasts, as well as any potential watches or warnings.
