Closure of Clear Creek Channel 5/10/19
Update #1 12MAY2019
As of May 12,
2019, at 11:00 A.M.,
the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston Captain of the Port is
expanding the established emergency temporary safety zone in the Lower Galveston
Bay. The new safety zone
boundaries are the western shores of Lower Galveston Bay, extending south to Eagle Point in San Leon, then
extending east up to but not including the Houston Ship Channel,
and then extending north up to but not
including the Bayport Ship Channel. This emergency safety zone is required to protect persons, property,
and
infrastructure from potential
damage and safety hazards associated with pollution and salvage operations of a
collision between a deep draft vessel and a towing vessel with two barges that occurred on May 10, 2019.
Please be advised that this closure is separate from traffic restrictions imposed by VTS Houston
Galveston.
The U.S.
Coast Guard Captain of the Port is working in close coordination with local and state authorities to
continuously evaluate the Houston Ship Channel and affected waterways to reassess the status of the closures
and will continue to update mariners. Local residents should continue to follow any direction provided by the
County officials.
This bulletin shall remain active until rescinded or superseded by future direction.
