<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL       AL052015

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">500 AM EDT SAT AUG 29 2015

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">Erika remains very disorganized with the deep convection still

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">displaced well east and southeast of the apparent center. The

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">initial intensity has been set at 35 kt based on the latest Dvorak

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">classification from TAFB, and these winds are likely occurring well

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">east and northeast of the center. Erika will have to contend with

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">land interaction and strong shear for the next day or so, which

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">should result in the cyclone weakening to a depression later today,

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">if not dissipating entirely. Assuming Erika survives the next 24

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">hours, some restrengthening is possible over the Gulf of Mexico in a

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">less hostile environment. The low-confidence NHC intensity forecast

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">is similar to the previous one and below the latest intensity

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">consensus.

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">The disorganized center of Erika has been difficult to locate, but

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">my best estimate of the initial motion is 290/17, with the center

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">moving a little to the left of the previous forecast track. Erika

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">should gradually turn toward the northwest and decelerate during the

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">next 36 to 48 hours as it moves around the edge of the subtropical

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">ridge. After that time a northward motion at an even slower forward

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">speed is expected. The new NHC track has been adjusted to the left,

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">especially during the first 48 hours, due to the initial position

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">and motion, and is largely an update of the previous forecast after

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">that time. The NHC forecast is close to the multi-model consensus

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">through 48 hours and is between the consensus and the GFS model

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">after that time. Given the uncertainty in the initial position and

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">motion, and whether Erika even has a closed center, confidence in

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">the details of the track forecast remains low.

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">The greatest short-term threat posed by Erika continues to be very

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">heavy rainfall over portions of Hispaniola and eastern Cuba. These

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">rains could produce flash floods and mudslides.

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">Although this would normally be an appropriate time for a tropical

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">storm watch for portions of southern Florida following typical

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">timelines, we have elected to wait until later today to see if the

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">circulation of Erika has survived its interaction with Hispaniola.

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft will be investigating

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">Erika later this morning. There is a significant chance that no

<span-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">watches or warnings for Florida will be required.
